Women in India are more educated than ever, yet they face some of the toughest job-market barriers.
According to Azim Premji University's State of Working India 2026 report, young female graduates face 29.4% unemployment compared with 19.2% for young male graduates. For many women, a government job offers what the private sector often doesn't: job security, equal pay by rule, generous maternity and child care leave, and a career that can survive life's big transitions.
The opportunity is bigger than most people realise. Women get fee waivers on many central exams, reserved seats in many states, and new entries into defence and policing that simply didn't exist a few years ago. This guide covers the benefits women get, the best government jobs by sector, options after a career break, and how to choose.
| Benefit | What you get |
|---|---|
| Maternity leave | 180 days of paid leave (IndianPayCalculator) |
| Child Care Leave (CCL) | Up to 730 days across your whole career for your two eldest children — paid at 100% for the first 365 days and 80% for the next 365 (GConnect / DPE) |
| Child adoption leave | Up to 180 days |
| Surrogacy | 180 days of maternity leave, plus child care leave for the commissioning mother (Tribune) |
| Flexibility | Minimum CCL period reduced to 5 days, and LTC allowed during CCL (Vikaspedia) |
| Workplace safety | Up to 90 days' leave while a sexual harassment complaint is being handled, plus creches in many offices |
Central PSUs have been asked to align their women employees' leave with these central government benefits (GConnect / DPE). State government rules vary, so check your state's service rules.
There is no general women's quota in central government jobs, but many states reserve a share of posts for women. This is usually horizontal reservation: women's seats are set aside within each category (General, OBC, SC, ST), so women compete partly among themselves.
In police forces. According to the India Justice Report, 14 of 34 states and UTs had 33% reservation for women in police. Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu had 30%, Karnataka 25% and Uttar Pradesh 20%, while Bihar had 35% plus 3% for backward-caste women (India Justice Report).
Rules change often, so check your state's latest notification. Reservation percentages are a strong reason for women to include their state PSC, police and teacher recruitments in their plan.
These desk-based, high-status careers combine good pay with predictable hours in most roles, and all are open to graduates.

Banking is especially popular with women because branches exist almost everywhere, which makes postings near home more achievable over a career.
This is the most under-served opportunity on the list. Many women still assume defence is closed to them, yet entries have opened rapidly. The number of women officers in India's armed forces rose from about 3,000 in 2014 to over 11,000 (Vision IAS), and in 2026 the first batch of 17 women cadets trained at the National Defence Academy was commissioned — 9 into the Army, 5 into the Air Force and 3 into the Navy (EaseMyPrep).
