For Indian families moving to the UAE, the school decision often matters as much as the job offer. School fees can be the single biggest cost after rent, and the curriculum you choose affects what happens if you return to India — board exams, college admissions and your child's continuity.
The good news: the UAE has one of the largest networks of Indian-curriculum schools outside India, with options from around AED 5,000 a year to over AED 70,000, many of them highly rated by the education regulators.
This guide compares the boards available, typical fees for 2026–27, notable schools with their ratings, differences between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates, how admissions work, and the costs beyond tuition. Fees and ratings change every year, so always confirm the latest figures with the school and the regulator before you decide.
| Board | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | India's Central Board of Secondary Education, following the NCERT curriculum — the most common board at Indian schools in the UAE | Families who may return to India, or whose children will sit JEE, NEET or other Indian entrance exams |
| ICSE / ISC | The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations' board, known for broader English and detailed coursework | Families who want an Indian board with a stronger language focus; fewer UAE schools offer it |
| Kerala State Board | Offered at a small number of schools serving Malayali families | Families likely to return to Kerala |
| International (IB, British, American) | Global curricula offered by many UAE schools, including some Indian-run groups | Families planning international university study, often at a higher cost |
Most Indian schools in the UAE follow the Indian academic calendar, starting in April, while international schools usually start in August or September. That matters for admission timing if you move mid-year.
Big news for Dubai families: fees are frozen. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai's education regulator, confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there will be no increase in private school fees for the 2026–27 academic year (WAM). In a normal year, schools can apply for increases based on the Education Cost Index — 2.35% for 2025–26 — scaled by their inspection rating (Takween Advisory).
Indian schools are the most affordable major option. Typical annual tuition bands for Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai:
| Tier | Annual tuition | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Around AED 5,000–12,000 | The Indian High School, Gulf Indian High School, GEMS Our Own Indian School |
| Mid-range | Around AED 11,000–30,000 | Delhi Private School, JSS Private School, Credence High School |
| Premium | Around AED 30,000–75,000 | GEMS Modern Academy |
Based on published 2026–27 fee ranges for named schools (Driven Properties, Best School, Num8ers).
In rupees: at about ₹26 per dirham, AED 10,000 is roughly ₹2.6 lakh a year, and AED 30,000 roughly ₹7.9 lakh. Fees rise with each grade, so budget for the higher classes your child will reach.
Where to check official fees. Every Dubai school publishes a KHDA School Fees Fact Sheet; confirm your child's exact grade and fee components there before deciding (Num8ers).
Fees below are published annual tuition ranges (lowest to highest grade) for 2026–27, frozen at 2025–26 levels. Ratings are each school's most recent KHDA inspection rating.
| School | Area | Annual tuition (AED) | KHDA rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| GEMS Modern Academy | Nad Al Sheba | 30,983 – 73,876 | Outstanding — the only Outstanding-rated Indian-curriculum school in Dubai (Best School) |
| Credence High School | — | 16,923 – 28,736 | Very Good (Best School) |
| JSS Private School | Al Safa | 12,145 – 26,375 | Very Good (Num8ers) |
| Primus Private School | Al Warqa 1 | 12,265 – 24,587 | Good (Driven Properties) |
| Delhi Private School | The Gardens | 11,139 – 15,592 | Very Good (Driven Properties) |
| GEMS Our Own English High School | Al Warqa 3 | 7,828 – 16,562 | Very Good (Driven Properties) |
| GEMS Our Own Indian School | Al Quoz | 7,209 – 14,696 | Very Good (Driven Properties) |
| The Indian High School | Oud Metha | 5,525 – 10,465 | Very Good (Best School) |
| Gulf Indian High School | — | 4,989 – 9,434 | Good (Best School) |
Other Indian-curriculum schools with Very Good ratings include The Millennium School and GEMS New Millennium School (MyQuriosity).
Value picks. The Indian High School stands out for combining a Very Good rating with some of the lowest fees in Dubai, while Gulf Indian High School offers a Good rating at under AED 10,000 (Best School). Note that The Indian High School's main campus listings show fees from Grade 5 upwards (MyQuriosity); younger children may attend a different branch.
About the ratings. KHDA's Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau rates schools on a scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Inspections are resuming in 2026–27, so ratings may change (Takween Advisory). Always check the latest report on KHDA's website.
Each emirate has its own regulator and rating system, so a "Very Good" in one isn't directly comparable to another.
| Emirate | Regulator | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | KHDA | Fees frozen for 2026–27; largest choice of Indian schools |
| Abu Dhabi (including Al Ain) | ADEK, using its Irtiqaa rating system (Gulf News) | Indian school fees average around AED 6,000–25,000 a year (Bayut) |
| Sharjah | SPEA (Sharjah Private Education Authority) | Popular with Dubai-based families for lower rents; many long-established Indian schools |
| Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and others | Ministry of Education | Smaller choice but growing, often at lower cost |
Abu Dhabi: Indian schools with Very Good ratings include Abu Dhabi Indian School (Al Wathba), Mayoor Private School, Private International English School (run by Bhavans) and Saint Joseph Private School (Bayut). Good-rated options include Global Indian International School, International Indian School and GEMS United Indian School (Edarabia). In Al Ain, Al Saad Indian School holds a Very Good rating (Edarabia).
Sharjah: highly rated Indian schools include GEMS Millennium School Sharjah (Outstanding), and Delhi Private School Sharjah, Our Own English High School Sharjah (boys' and girls' schools) and Ambassador School Sharjah (all Very Good) (Edarabia). Sharjah Indian School and Amity Private School Sharjah are rated Good.
Northern emirates. Delhi Private School has sister schools in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah (opened April 2021) and Ajman (Wikipedia), and GEMS runs Our Own English High Schools in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain (Wikipedia).
Tip: Many families choose where to live based on the school. Shortlist schools first, then look for housing within a reasonable bus ride — school transport costs and travel time add up quickly.
Academic year and age cut-off. Indian-curriculum schools run from April to March, and their age cut-off is 31 March. The UAE's 2026–27 change to a 31 December cut-off applies to September-start international schools, not to April-start Indian schools (Khaleej Times).
| Grade | Age by 31 March | Born between (for 2026–27) |
|---|---|---|
| KG1 | 4 years | 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022 |
| KG2 | 5 years | 1 April 2020 – 31 March 2021 |
| Grade 1 | 6 years | 1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020 |

Grade 1 and above: the transfer certificate decides. For Grade 1 and above, the transfer certificate (TC) is the primary reference for placement, and where it differs from the UAE age–grade chart, the school must notify KHDA before confirming placement (Khaleej Times).
Start the TC attestation in India before you move. It's the step most families underestimate, and doing it after arriving in the UAE is far harder.
Timing and waitlists. Popular, affordable Indian schools fill up fast, and seats in middle grades can be scarce. Apply to several schools, ideally months before the April start, and register on waitlists early. Many schools run an entrance assessment for older grades.
Tuition is only part of the bill. Budget for these as well, and ask each school for its full list of charges:
| Cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Registration or application fee | One-off, often non-refundable |
| Admission or re-enrolment deposit | Usually adjusted against fees later |
| School bus | Can be a significant annual cost, depending on distance |
| Uniforms and books | Annual cost; Indian schools generally cost less than international ones |
| CBSE board exam fees | For Classes 10 and 12 |
| Trips, activities and after-school clubs | Optional but common |
| Devices | Many schools now require a laptop or tablet |
Check for unapproved charges. In Dubai, the school's published fee schedule is the reference; a fee that appears on an invoice but not in the published schedule is the first thing to query (UAE Expert Hub).
Ask your employer about an education allowance. For families, school fees can be the deciding factor in whether a UAE move pays off. Some packages include an education allowance; it's worth negotiating before you sign. The bottom line: Indian-curriculum schools give families in the UAE a familiar board at a fraction of international school fees, with highly rated options from around AED 5,000 a year. Choose the board for your long-term plans, shortlist by rating, fees and location, and start the paperwork in India early.
