What this means for you
Before you decide: the non-money checklist
- Read the offer letter closely: basic and allowances, probation, notice period, and who pays the visa and medical. Our Gulf job offer checklist and guide to evaluating an offer help.
- Know what happens to your family’s visas if you lose your job, and how long you get after a visa is cancelled. See family visas after job loss and the grace period guide.
- Check school seats and admission dates early if you have children. See our guide to Indian schools in the UAE.
- Look at where you would live and the commute, not just the rent. See the rent guide for areas.
- Ask about health insurance for dependants, annual leave, flight tickets and what the employer pays at end of service.
- Think about career growth, your partner’s work, ageing parents, and how long you really want to stay.

How this calculator works
You enter what you earn and spend in India, then the UAE offer and your expected UAE costs. The calculator works out what you would keep each month in both places and compares them over the years you choose. Everything runs in your browser.
Savings in India
Your monthly savings are in-hand salary plus variable pay and rental income, minus household expenses and EMIs.
Savings in the UAE
Your UAE income is the total monthly salary converted at your exchange rate, plus any rent you still receive in India. From it we subtract your UAE living costs, one-time relocation costs spread over the period, and what you still pay in India: your family’s expenses (or support for parents) and your EMIs. Employer-paid benefits set the matching cost line to zero, and an education allowance is taken off school fees but never below zero.
Gratuity and bonus
Gratuity is counted from one full year of service, on basic salary only: 21 days of basic pay for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after. It is added to your UAE total together with any joining bonus. The India line has no equivalent.
Break-even and recommended salary
The break-even salary is the UAE salary at which you would save exactly what you save in India now. The recommended minimum is the salary at which you would keep 30% of your UAE pay after all these costs.
The verdict
- The offer doesn’t cover your costs: you would save nothing, or be short each month.
- Not worth it financially: you would save no more than you do in India.
- Marginal: you would save less than ₹50,000 a month more, or keep under 20% of your UAE salary.
- Good offer or Excellent offer: Excellent means at least ₹1,50,000 a month more and a savings rate of 35% or higher.
What it leaves out
The calculator does not include tax, salary growth, inflation, changes in the exchange rate, interest on savings or job loss. The Low, Typical and High cost presets are planning estimates based on typical prices and will differ by area and lifestyle. For area-wise numbers see our UAE rent guide, the UAE salary guide and the India to UAE cost comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How much salary is good in Dubai for an Indian?
It depends on whether you move alone or with family. With this calculator’s typical costs, a single person living in a studio spends about AED 9,000 a month, so a salary of roughly AED 13,000 or more leaves about 30% as savings. A family of four with two children in CBSE schools spends about AED 20,000 a month, so you would need around AED 29,000 or more for the same savings rate. Costs in India that you keep paying, such as EMIs, push the number up. Enter your own figures to see your break-even and recommended salary, and compare with our UAE salary guide.
Is it better to move to Dubai alone or with family?
Moving alone usually saves more each month because rent is lower and there are no school fees, but you carry two households and the cost of living apart. Moving with family costs far more in rent, schooling, a car and insurance, so the same salary saves much less. Use the scenario switch at the top of the calculator to see both on your own numbers. Money is only part of the decision, so also read the checklist under the results.
How is UAE gratuity calculated?
For most private-sector employees who complete at least one year, end-of-service gratuity is based on basic salary only: 21 days of basic pay for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that. Allowances are not included. For example, a basic of AED 15,000 over three years gives 15,000 ÷ 30 × 63 days = AED 31,500. Your contract and your employer’s free zone or sector can change the details, so check your contract.
Do I pay tax in India on my UAE salary?
The UAE does not charge personal income tax on salaries. Whether India taxes your UAE salary depends on your residential status for the year, which turns mainly on how many days you spend in India. As a non-resident (NRI), you are generally taxed in India only on income that arises in India, such as rent from a flat or interest. The year you move can be mixed. This calculator does not estimate tax, so confirm your status and any liability with a chartered accountant.
What costs should I budget for in Dubai?
Plan for rent (the biggest cost, and usually paid in one to four cheques with a deposit), food, utilities and internet, transport or a car, flights home, health insurance for dependants, and school fees if you have children. One-time costs include visa and medical fees, a rental deposit, furniture and your first flights. Our rent guide and India to UAE cost comparison have area-wise numbers.
