A CV that works in Bengaluru, London or New York can quietly fail in Dubai. UAE recruiters routinely filter candidates on details that Western and Indian resume advice tells you to leave out — nationality, visa status and how soon you can join — and many still expect a photo.
The trouble is that advice online is contradictory. One major guide says a professional headshot is expected rather than optional (Bayt); another says to include a photo only if the job posting asks for it or the role is customer-facing, because an image can break ATS parsing (MyCVPassport).
This guide settles those questions. It explains why UAE recruiters ask for personal details, exactly what to put in your header, how to handle the photo question, the right section order, a ready-to-copy sample, special cases for people applying from India or on a visit visa, and the mistakes that get CVs skipped.
It can feel intrusive, but there are practical reasons behind it:
What's genuinely optional: date of birth and marital status. Even guides that list them describe them as common rather than required, and one notes marital status is declining in relevance for private-sector roles (MyCVPassport). Religion, passport number, and parents' names don't belong on a CV.
Put the essentials in the top inch of page one. A simple, effective approach is a second header line in plain text: nationality, visa status and notice period (Labeeb).
| Detail | Include? | How to write it |
|---|---|---|
| Full name and target job title | Yes | "Priya Nair — Senior Financial Analyst" |
| Phone | Yes | With country code: +971 if you have a UAE number, +91 if applying from India |
| Email and LinkedIn | Yes | Professional email and a short LinkedIn URL |
| Location | Yes | City only (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or your current city abroad), not a full address |
| Nationality | Yes | "Indian national" |
| Visa status | Yes | Be specific (see below) |
| Notice period / availability | Yes | "30 days' notice" or "Immediate joiner" |
| UAE driving licence | If relevant | Valuable for sales, field and logistics roles |
| Languages | Yes | With level; Arabic, even basic, is a real plus |
| Photo | It depends | See below |
| Date of birth, marital status | Optional | Include only if requested or clearly useful |
Writing your visa status clearly. Vague labels slow recruiters down. Be specific — for example, "Employment Visa (transferable)", "Golden Visa", "Dependent Visa (spouse-sponsored)", "Visit Visa — valid until 15 Jan 2027" or "Overseas — requires sponsorship". Guides recommend stating transferability where it applies (ReapHR).
Writing your notice period. UAE notice periods typically run from 30 to 90 days, and recruiters plan around them (UAE Expert Hub). If you're already free, "Immediate joiner" is a strong selling point.
Guides genuinely disagree, so here's a practical rule:
The simplest solution is to keep two versions: a photo version for direct sharing, and a photo-free ATS version for online applications.
The standard UAE CV is a clean, reverse-chronological document of one to two pages, leading with a strong summary (Bayt). One page for fresh graduates, two for experienced candidates is a common rule of thumb (ReapHR).

The example is fictional. Replace every detail with your own, and keep the eligibility line on the fourth row so recruiters see it immediately.
Applying from India (or another country). Convert your Indian resume rather than just re-sending it: add the nationality and visa line, remove Indian-only details like a full home address and CTC in lakhs, and use regional keywords. Write your location as your current city and state openly that you'd need a work visa: "Mumbai, India · Indian national · Requires UAE employment visa · 60 days' notice." Never pay anyone to "guarantee" a UAE job — UAE law requires employers to cover recruitment costs, and genuine offers carry a serial number and barcode you can verify with MoHRE (Gulf News).
On a visit visa in the UAE. State it clearly with the expiry date: "Visit Visa — valid until 15 Jan 2027 · Immediate joiner." Being in the country and available immediately is attractive to employers. But don't start working until your employer has arranged your work permit and visa.
On a dependent or spouse visa. Write "Dependent Visa (husband-sponsored)" or similar. Employers can hire you with a work permit and may not need to sponsor your residence, which can make you easier to hire.
Golden Visa holders. Say so clearly; it signals stability and avoids residency-sponsorship costs for the employer.
UAE nationals. Write "UAE National" in the visa line. Emirati candidates are in demand under Emiratisation, and the minimum private-sector salary for Emiratis rose to AED 6,000 a month from 1 January 2026 (VJM Global).
Fresh graduates. Keep it to one page. Lead with education, internships, projects and certifications, and mention any UAE-relevant experience such as internships in the region or Arabic language skills.
Career gaps. Show them honestly with a brief explanation. Our guide How to Explain a Career Gap on Your Resume and in Interviews has examples.
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No visa status, nationality or notice period | Recruiters filter on these first and may skip you | Add a plain-text eligibility line under your name |
| Copy-pasting a UK, US or Indian resume | Missing the details UAE recruiters expect (TailorMyCV) | Adapt the header and keywords for the UAE |
| Vague visa status ("Valid visa") | Recruiters can't tell what hiring involves | Name the visa type, sponsor type and transferability |
| Phone number without country code | Overseas recruiters can't call easily | Use +971 or +91 format |
| Eligibility details in a graphic or sidebar image | ATS may not read them | Use plain text |
| Casual, filtered or full-length photo | Looks unprofessional | Professional headshot only, or no photo |
| Over three pages, or a biodata format | Hard to scan | Keep to one or two pages |
| Inflated titles or fake experience | UAE employers verify credentials and attestation | Stay accurate; background checks are standard |
Protect your privacy. Don't include your passport number, Emirates ID number, full home address, or copies of documents in your CV. Share these only after you've verified a genuine offer, through official channels.
The bottom line: a UAE CV is a normal, results-focused CV with one important addition — a clear eligibility line that tells recruiters who you are, whether you can be hired, and when you can start. Get that right, decide your photo strategy, and let your achievements do the rest. Build your UAE CV free on ResumeMinter and check its ATS score before you apply.
