The urgent dates right now
UPSC Engineering Services (ESE) 2027 applications close on 6 October 2026, with the prelims on 31 January 2027. If you're an engineering graduate, check this today -- the window is closing fast.
NDA and CDS (I) 2027 notifications come out on 2 December 2026, last date 22 December 2026, exam on 11 April 2027.
UPSC Civil Services 2027: notification on 13 January 2027, last date 2 February 2027, prelims on 23 May 2027, and mains from 20 August 2027.
GATE 2027 (the gateway to PSU jobs) registration ran until 21 September, with a late-fee window to 30 September 2026, so it has closed. If you registered, the exam is on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.
Will salaries jump in 2027? The 8th Pay Commission
The 8th Pay Commission, which will revise central government pay, was constituted in November 2025 and is still consulting stakeholders, with the fitment factor and pay structure not yet finalised. Its report is expected around mid-2027. January 1, 2026 is the reference date, so employees may get arrears if implementation comes later.
This means central government salaries in 2027 could rise meaningfully, but no one knows the final numbers yet. Ignore WhatsApp forwards claiming exact figures -- the figures below use the current, confirmed 7th Pay Commission scales, which is what you'll actually be offered if you join before the 8th Pay Commission is implemented.
1. Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and 20+ services) via UPSC CSE
This is the most prestigious route into Indian government service, covering the IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and more than twenty other central services. Entry pay is Level 10 of the pay matrix (basic ₹56,100 under the current 7th Pay Commission) plus DA, HRA, housing and perks, rising quickly with promotions. Eligibility is any graduate, from any stream. Selection runs through prelims, mains, then a personality interview.
The Indian Forest Service prelims is held through the same CSE prelims on 23 May 2027, so if you're interested in IFoS, the same exam covers both.
2. RBI Grade B Officer
This is arguably the best-paid entry-level government job in India. RBI Grade B officers start at a basic pay of ₹78,450, with gross monthly salary around ₹1.5 lakh. RBI uses its own pay scale, which is separate from and higher than the public-sector bank (IBA) scale most people associate with bank jobs.
The 2026 cycle had 60 posts across General, DEPR and DSIM streams, and Phase 1 was held in June 2026. There's no fixed calendar for this one, so the 2027 notification date is uncertain -- expect roughly April to September based on past patterns, and check the official site regularly rather than waiting for a fixed date.
The insight: because RBI Grade B has no fixed calendar, candidates who wait for a "launch date" often miss the window entirely. If this role interests you, bookmark the official RBI opportunities page now and check it monthly starting April 2027.
3. SEBI Grade A and NABARD Grade A
These are regulatory and development-finance roles with strong pay. One salary guide lists SEBI Grade A (Assistant Manager) basic pay at ₹62,500 and above. NABARD Grade A, the development-banking equivalent, sits in a similar bracket.
None of these three exams -- RBI Grade B, SEBI Grade A, NABARD Grade A -- follows a fixed calendar. SEBI now gives a short advance notice about two to three weeks before its full notification, so you must monitor the site regularly rather than relying on a predictable yearly date.
4. PSU Engineers and Management Trainees via GATE
GATE scores are the main entry route to more than 50 public sector undertakings, including NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, BHEL, POWERGRID and SAIL. PSU executive pay (typically the E1/E2 IDA scale) often leads to CTC well above central government Level 10 jobs, especially in Maharatna oil and power companies.
Two things to know before you plan around this route: most PSUs consider only the current year's GATE score, so you need to apply in the same cycle you take the exam; and you apply separately to each PSU's own recruitment notice after the GATE result comes out, usually between March and May.
5. Engineering Services (IES) via UPSC ESE
This leads to Group A engineering posts in Railways, CPWD, defence engineering, telecom and more. The 2026 cycle had roughly 474 vacancies. As covered above, applications for the 2027 cycle close on 6 October 2026 -- the prelims are on 31 January 2027 and the mains on 18 June 2027.
6. Defence Officers via CDS, NDA, AFCAT and technical entries
Officers in the Army, Navy and Air Force start at Level 10 plus Military Service Pay and allowances, with free accommodation, medical care and canteen benefits added on top of the base salary. CDS (I) and NDA (I) are both on 11 April 2027, and CDS/NDA (II) follows on 19 September 2027. Women can apply for many entries, not just the officer-training routes typically assumed.
7. Other high-value routes
A handful of specialised UPSC and defence exams are worth knowing about if your background fits: the Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service suit economics and statistics postgraduates (notification 10 February 2027, exam 18 June 2027). The Combined Medical Services exam for MBBS doctors is on 18 July 2027, and the CAPF Assistant Commandant exam is on 4 July 2027. Scientist posts at ISRO and DRDO also start at Level 10 and are recruited through their own boards on a rolling basis rather than a single annual exam.
8. High-volume, solid pay: SSC CGL and Bank PO
If you want strong odds alongside strong pay, SSC CGL leads to posts like Income Tax Inspector, Assistant Section Officer and Excise Inspector, in pay Levels 6 to 8. Bank PO roles through IBPS and SBI sit in a similar tier and recruit in much larger numbers than the UPSC-level exams above.
SSC published its 2026-27 calendar on 8 January 2026, so the 2027-28 calendar should appear around January 2027 -- check back then. IBPS also publishes an annual calendar of exams for PO, SO, Clerk and RRB roles, typically early in the calendar year.
The insight: the UPSC and RBI-tier exams get most of the attention, but SSC CGL and Bank PO recruit far more people every year. If your priority is a stable government job sooner rather than the single most prestigious one, this tier is usually the faster path.

How applying works (same pattern almost everywhere)
First, download the official notification PDF and read the eligibility rules carefully: age limit, qualification, number of attempts, and category relaxations. Next, create your One Time Registration (OTR) where the body uses one -- UPSC and SSC both do. Then fill the application, upload your photo, signature and documents in the exact format specified, pay the fee online, and save the final PDF.
Apply in the first week of the window, because portals slow down near deadlines. After that, track admit cards and results only on the official site -- never through a link someone sends you directly.
Stay safe from scams
As covered in our 2027 job market piece, job scams are widespread, and government hiring is a favourite target precisely because the pay and prestige are so high. No genuine government recruitment asks for money through WhatsApp or Telegram, promises "guaranteed selection," or sends offer letters without an exam.
Check the domain: government sites end in .gov.in or .nic.in (RBI uses rbi.org.in). If a link doesn't match the table above, don't enter your details -- close the tab and go directly to the official site yourself.
The bottom line
Most of 2027's biggest government opportunities already have dates attached -- the work now is tracking the right calendar, not waiting for announcements. If you're an engineering graduate, the UPSC ESE deadline on 6 October 2026 is the one that can't wait. Everyone else has a few more months to prepare, but the earlier you build your application -- documents, eligibility checks, OTR -- the less you'll be fighting slow portals in the final week.
And whichever exam you're aiming for, the resume and cover letter you'll eventually need for the interview stage, or for the private-sector roles you apply to in parallel, still has to earn its place. That part isn't on a fixed calendar -- you can get it right today.
