Top 10 Emerging Skills in India for 2027: chart of October 2026 hiring growth by job area (overall white-collar +14%, AI and machine learning +32%, production and manufacturing +39%)

What the chart shows. Overall white-collar hiring rose 14% in October. AI and machine learning roles grew 32%, production and manufacturing roles 39%. IT services and software engineering barely grew. The growth is real, but it is concentrated in specific skills.

The 10 skills in detail

1. Generative AI and LLMOps

What it is. Building, deploying and running applications on top of large language models: prompt and retrieval design (RAG), AI agents, evaluation, monitoring and cost control. LLMOps means keeping these systems reliable in production.

Why it matters. LLMOps is #4 on LinkedIn's India list (Digit). AI and ML job postings rose 32% year on year in October 2026 (Lapaas Voice). NASSCOM reports a 51% demand-supply gap in AI roles (Edstellar, citing NASSCOM).

Roles: AI engineer, ML engineer, LLMOps/MLOps engineer, AI solutions architect, AI product manager.

Learn it: Python, one cloud AI platform, vector databases and RAG, then build and deploy one working app with evaluation and monitoring.

2. Data engineering and analytics

What it is. Collecting, cleaning, storing and querying data so businesses and AI systems can use it: SQL, data pipelines, warehouses and lakehouses, and dashboards.

Why it matters. "Querying" is #1 on LinkedIn's India list and data engineering is #8 (Digit). Every AI project depends on good data. NASSCOM and Deloitte put the demand-supply gap for data scientist and ML engineer roles at 60–73% (Edstellar).

Roles: data engineer, analytics engineer, data analyst, BI developer.

Learn it: SQL first, then Python, one cloud data platform and a BI tool. Build a portfolio project using public Indian datasets.

3. Cybersecurity, including cloud security and AI risk

What it is. Protecting systems, data and AI models: cloud and application security, identity and zero-trust, security operations, and securing AI systems themselves.

Why it matters. Cybersecurity is #2 on LinkedIn's India list (Digit). India has about 4–5 lakh cybersecurity professionals and nearly 40,000 open positions, with a 25–30% shortage at mid-to-senior levels (SightsIn Plus, citing TeamLease Digital). Salaries rose about 20% year on year, and pay growth is strongest in cloud security, AI risk, DevSecOps and zero-trust architecture.

Roles: security analyst (SOC), cloud security engineer, application security engineer, GRC analyst, AI security specialist.

Learn it: networking and Linux basics, then an entry certification (such as CompTIA Security+ or ISC2 CC), then a cloud security specialisation. Hands-on labs matter more than theory.

4. Cloud, DevOps and platform engineering

What it is. Building and running applications on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud: infrastructure as code, containers and Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, site reliability and cost management.

Why it matters. Cloud computing is one of the four most in-demand skills in the India Skills Report 2026 (Careers360). NASSCOM lists DevOps engineer among roles with a 60–73% demand-supply gap (Edstellar). GCCs, where hiring grew 18% in October, rely heavily on cloud talent (Lapaas Voice).

Roles: cloud engineer, DevOps engineer, site reliability engineer, platform engineer, FinOps analyst.

Learn it: one cloud platform's associate-level certification, Linux, Docker, Kubernetes and Terraform. Deploy a real app end to end.

5. Workflow automation and process optimisation

What it is. Redesigning business processes and automating them with AI agents, low-code tools and RPA, in finance, HR, customer service, operations and supply chain.

Why it matters. Workflow automation is #5 and process optimisation #6 on LinkedIn's India list (Digit). It's a strong route for non-coders: in October, finance and accounting hiring in BPO and ITES rose 84% (Lapaas Voice), as service firms rebuild back-office work around automation.

Roles: automation analyst, process excellence lead, AI operations specialist, business analyst, Lean Six Sigma practitioner.

Learn it: process mapping and Lean basics, one low-code automation platform, and practical use of AI agents. Automate one real process in your current job and measure the time saved.

6. Data privacy, AI governance and compliance

What it is. Making sure companies handle personal data and AI responsibly: privacy programmes, consent management, AI risk assessments and regulatory reporting.

Why it matters. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, notified in November 2025, give companies about 18 months to comply, with penalties of up to ₹250 crore per violation (Edstellar). That puts the main deadline in 2027, so demand should peak this year. Banks, insurers, hospitals, e-commerce firms and GCCs all need this skill.

Roles: privacy analyst, data protection officer, AI governance specialist, GRC and compliance manager.

Learn it: the DPDP Act and Rules, privacy frameworks and a privacy certification. Lawyers, compliance staff, auditors and risk professionals can move into this field quickly.

7. Semiconductor and VLSI design

What it is. Designing, verifying, manufacturing and packaging chips: VLSI design, verification, embedded systems, process engineering and advanced packaging.

Why it matters. India has attracted about ₹1.6 lakh crore of semiconductor investment, including Tata Electronics' fab in Dholera, Gujarat. Only a small share of India's roughly 6 lakh electronics graduates each year are job-ready for fab or VLSI roles (Taggd).

Roles: VLSI design or verification engineer, embedded engineer, process engineer, test and packaging engineer.

Learn it: digital electronics, Verilog/SystemVerilog and design tools, through specialised courses or the government's semiconductor skilling programmes. Best suited to ECE/EEE graduates.

8. Green energy, EV and ESG analytics

What it is. Skills for renewable energy, electric vehicles, batteries, green hydrogen and sustainability reporting, increasingly combined with data and AI.

Why it matters. India's green sector is projected to create 7.29 million jobs by FY28, with 1.2–1.5 million new jobs in FY27 alone. Nearly 70% of new green roles need tech skills, and the country faces a shortfall of 1.5–2 million skilled professionals (Telangana Today, citing NLB Services). Battery analytics, hydrogen engineering and ESG data science are among the hardest roles to fill.

Roles: renewable energy engineer, EV powertrain or battery engineer, ESG analyst, sustainability data analyst, carbon accounting specialist.

Learn it: engineers can add EV, battery or solar specialisations. Finance, audit and analytics professionals can move into ESG reporting and carbon accounting.

9. Advanced manufacturing and industrial automation

What it is. Running modern factories: industrial automation (PLC/SCADA), robotics, digital twins, predictive maintenance, quality analytics and supply chain technology.

Why it matters. Production and manufacturing hiring rose 39% in October 2026. In the automobile sector, R&D hiring grew 53% and procurement and supply chain 50%; in industrial products, quality assurance hiring rose 41% (Lapaas Voice). Hiring is spreading beyond the metros, with Gujarat cities such as Gandhinagar (+48%) and Surat (+36%) growing fastest.

Roles: automation engineer, robotics technician, quality engineer, manufacturing data analyst, supply chain analyst.

Learn it: PLC programming, industrial IoT, quality tools (Six Sigma, SPC) and basic data analytics. Mechanical, electrical and diploma holders can build on what they already know.

10. AI-enabled programme and transformation management

What it is. Leading the change: running AI and digital transformation programmes, managing stakeholders, measuring value and getting teams to adopt new ways of working.

Why it matters. LinkedIn ranks "collaboration" #7 in India and notes that the main bottleneck in engineering has moved from writing code to aligning people (Digit). In October, hiring for professionals with 13–16 years' experience and above rose 22% (Lapaas Voice), the strongest of any experience band. Companies need experienced people who understand both the business and AI.

Roles: programme manager, transformation lead, AI adoption lead, product owner, PMO head.

Learn it: pair a project management credential (PMP, PRINCE2 or Agile) with practical AI literacy: what AI can do, its risks, and how to measure its value. Lead one AI pilot in your organisation.

What these skills pay

The premium is real. EY's Future of Pay 2026 report finds AI, generative AI, machine learning, cybersecurity and cloud skills command pay premiums of 30–40%, and nearly half of organisations are moving to skills-based pay (People Matters). For comparison, average raises across India Inc are projected at 9.1% in 2027, and just 6.6% in tech services (Business Standard).
